In the late eighties and early nineties, the ETH Zürich researchers worked intensively on the development of high nitrogen steels at the Institute of Metals Research – with some success. The result was important patents with industrial partners. A number of such steels are still in use today, in particular the nickel-free austenitic steels used in medicine.

In the picture, some of the most important scientists of contemporary metallurgy, from left to right: Professors Peter J. Uggowitzer, Markus O. Speidel and Heinrich Feichtinger showing a custom-made autoclave which allowed them to alloy steel with nitrogen under high pressures!
We are also pleased to congratulate Professor Uggowitzer for his 70th birthday and an extraordinary legacy for science and technology, not only by an extensive bibliography generated all over these years, but by numerous students that he supervised and that now are continuing his legacy helping others!
