The Position of Science in a World in Conflict

As we stand at the incipience of 2026, gazing upon a world that continues to grapple with conflict and wars, we find ourselves questioning not only our future but also our very purpose. In such turbulent times, it is more crucial than ever to look towards science – an embodiment of knowledge, progress, and hope – for guidance and reassurance.

In the unfolding narrative of human history, science has always played a pivotal role, serving not just as a witness but also as a catalyst to our evolution. The ancient Greek philosophers, who first conceived the scientific method, would be astounded by how far we have come since their time (only two thousand years!). Science has given us fire, the wheel, electricity, and, most recently, technology that transforms our lives in ways they could not have imagined.

However, the 21st century, with all its advancements, has also brought us a darker reality – one marred by never-ending conflict. As we stand on the brink of this new year, it is imperative to reflect upon the role science should play in reshaping our world.

First and foremost, let us reaffirm our commitment to pacifism – the belief that all conflicts can and should be resolved peacefully. The destructive potential of technology serves as a grim reminder of the consequences when the pursuit of knowledge is not guided by compassion and humanity. As scientists and researchers, we have a moral obligation to create solutions that benefit society without causing harm or exacerbating existing tensions.

To achieve this vision, we must prioritise peacebuilding in our research agendas. This includes developing technologies for communication, cooperation, energy, sustainability and understanding between nations; supporting efforts to reduce armed violence and promote conflict prevention and resolution; and fostering scientific collaborations that bridge cultural and political divides.

Moreover, science must be made accessible to all people, regardless of their geographical location or socio-economic status. The democratisation of knowledge is essential for the empowerment of individuals and communities, thus promoting social cohesion and fostering a culture of peace.

Furthermore, let us not forget that science thrives on collaboration, dialogue, and exchange of ideas. As we embark upon this new year 2026, let us redouble our efforts to promote international scientific cooperation, breaking down walls and barriers to ensure that progress is shared by all humanity.

In a world in conflict, the position of science can no longer be one that remains silent or passive. Instead, it must take an active role in promoting peace and fostering the betterment of society. By emphasizing pacifism, prioritising social benefit, making knowledge accessible, and championing international cooperation, we can ensure that the scientific endeavors of 2026 contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous world for all.

Let us look forward to the coming year with hope and determination – united in our pursuit of a better world through science. As we move forward together, let us remember that the power of human ingenuity has the potential to create not just conflict but also peace; it is up to us to choose which path we shall follow.

Happy New Year 2026!
