Professor Pogatscher at the forefront of ESA’s Gateway lunar mission

Professor Stefan Pogatscher –– the head of the Department of Metallurgy in our University – is contributing to the “Gateway” lunar mission, an international project aiming to establish an outpost in lunar orbit in the coming years. This station, more distant from Earth than the International Space Station (ISS), will serve as a relay for moon missions. Professor Pogatscher is assisting the European Space Agency (ESA) in designing the METIS module (Multifunctional Exposure Testbed In deep Space). Along with twelve other scientists from ESA, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), CSA (Canadian Space Agency), and NASA, they are developing a platform to study the effects of space conditions on plant seeds and materials.

Professor Stefan Pogatscher recently led the discovery of aluminium crossover alloys which are now promising candidates to be applied in the harsh environmental conditions found in space. Photo: Montanuniversität Leoben
