There are more connections between materials science and the night sky than you might expect, and few groups at Montanuniversität Leoben are exploring that intersection quite as visibly as LUNA — the Leoben University Network for Astronomy.

This student-led community runs public observation nights at the university’s own rooftop observatory, hosts Space Talks with researchers and industry experts, and offers hands-on engineering workshops, some of which are already integrated into the university’s formal study programme. Perhaps most exciting for us at [X-MAT]: LUNA is currently exploring the concept of a small student satellite designed for in-orbit materials testing — an idea that sits squarely at the crossroads of Leoben’s materials expertise and the emerging field of space engineering.
The association is open to everyone, with no astronomy background required, and welcomes participants from both inside and outside the university. LUNA has just launched a beautiful new website — do visit https://luna.unileoben.ac.at/ to find out when the next observation night is, or simply to send them a hello.
